A few weeks ago I mentioned that there was a book out by some homies that is cool as hell. It’s was (and still is) called Handbook for Hacks.
They are also launching a class you can take called
School for Hacks.
I took the one on copy writings and now I write good n stuff.
Anyway, no point in rewording it just to pretend like it was my idea. Here’s what they emailed me.
Tomorrow, we're officially launching School for Hacks. We're going to be offering Concepting, Copywriting, and Art Directing classes. You're welcome in any class that you're willing to give us feedback on because we're friends and I value your opinion a lot. Just let me know what you want to join, if you do.
If you want to offer a discount to your network, either by tagging School for Hacks on LinkedIn in a post, or by sharing with your newsletter (or both), you can share the code STRATSCRAPS25 to give them 25% off one class.
Note:
this was sent to me yesterday, so “tomorrow” really means today…
Note 2:
I bet your company would pay for it. Even if (especially?) you’re in strategy. It’ll make your briefs better I promise.

An anecdote about sponsored content;
So a few weeks back, I was approached by a company that does trend forecasting type work. They were hosting a conference and asked if I’d be interested in being paid to promote it on Strat Scraps.
I told them maybe, let’s talk. My one condition was that I would want to be given access to material from the conference that I could offer my readers for free. For anyone who couldn’t afford the tickets or convince their agency to buy them.
The whole premise of StratScraps is access to information.
Ultimately it didn’t work out.. What they were going to pay me felt like it wasn’t worth introducing the idea that anything I write could be a sponsorship.
But it got me thinking… If the paid part is clearly labeled, maybe thats something people want? Access to info that is otherwise reserved for people who shell out big bucks to attend conferences?
Anyway, curious to hear what people think.

The Question Artist (NYT Magazine, 2012)
I find more valuable reading in old articles than I do in new ones.
The well is just inherently deeper.

HOT TAKE:
”Workshops are a waste of time. Trojan horses of mediocrity to quote Adliterate. These are a way for people with bad ideas and little imagination to get really, really smelly ideas into the mix. Only workshop when you have no choice. And if you must have one, employ dirty tricks to get what you need out of it (see Rule 11) 11. Use workshops as major tool for dirty planning. If you have the kind of client, or stakeholder group who never approve anything unless it's their idea, it's time for a workshop. Just make sure you know what the answer is and structure the day and your moderation on helping folks think for themselves.”
I can argue both sides of this debate. What I actually believe is a mystery.
