There are SO MANY new apps focused on information management etc. What are being called “Tools for Thought” (which is apparently now a tag in the databases of venture capital firms).
I am a sucker for these apps. I can’t seem to get into the notion habit, but I’ve downloaded everything outthere for a trial.
… And as a result, my notes are fucking everywhere and impossible to manage.
I also think they are incredibly damaging to my own ability to think. Crutches cause atrophy after all.
There is also a less talked about element of the explosion of apps. The templates each creates to ease the onboarding process.
Look. I collect templates. I like them. But I try not to work from them. A framework, sure. But not a template.
A framework is a way of thinking.
A structure for organizing thoughts.
Templates get filled in.
My tip: try to only use templates or frameworks of your own making.
Before students had access to CAD, drawing was the foundation of
their work and was believed to be necessary “during all the developmental stages of a mechanical design” ” (Ullman, 1990, p. 263).

Reasoning forwards vs reasoning backwards…
Reasoning Forwards is what we do most often. It can be reduced to:
“If this is true, what will happen?”
Reasoning backwards is (obviously) the opposite:
“If this has happened, what must be true?”

This is the most interesting website I’ve come across in a long time.
It is the work of a furniture designer researching the future of the human body.
That alone is super cool.
The site is also then designed into a IA structure based on “the structure of Aristotle’s “Great Chain of Being,” a vertical diagram for the heavens and earth”
Here are a few favorite excerpts, although the interface of the website it a part of the experience:

Hardly surprising but gives support to my hypothesis of not being able to day dream if your phone is within reach/earshot.

“Where does value come from”
A presentation about (mimetic theory/Steve Jobs/scapegoats as precursors to culture) + (how all of this can be used in business)1… I don’t buy all of it, but a fun read nonetheless.
“It’s not greed that drives the world, but envy.”
I do think this to be true however.

I print one of these every day. It has helped me immensely. Hopefully it helps you as well.

WEEKLY MONSTER
to be honest I haven’t made anything since last week. I am sorry.
Here is a monster in terms of something I saw that has been haunting me.
I hope your spearmint flavor is still minty fresh.
