I think about this comic a lot.
Sometimes the process of thinking looks like needless chaos from the outside.
Half the time, my version of the last panel would say “well I’m not done. Just wait”
But the other half, it would read “I guess this wasn’t helpful, was it”
But thats what planners should be doing. Banging on random objects just to see what it might shake out. Planners need to make a mess in order to arrive at clarity.
Or maybe I’m more chaos than I should be.
The metaphor is strained, but regardless…

Sometimes I share stuff that I wish others were better at. This is something I’m sharing that has many things I wish I was better at.

I came across this recently:
The most dangerous kind of job is one you only kind of like a little but are very good at.
And it made me think – am I good at the job or am I good at what I want the job to be?

A short note on entropy
This feels counterintuitive, but things tend to get more complex unless you are actively trying to simplify them
It's easy to get fixated on "more" and in that process we just keep diluting all of the work we've already done

This diagram has always haunted me… Because it feels so true and especially because my job is entirely dependent on my ability to translate what I think into what people actually understand.
As such, I downloaded a few books on the topic. Its hard to tell what books will be helpful vs which will end up being pseudo self help shit industry garbage, but this is the one I’m starting with. Just in case anyone else has been haunted by the same problem.
Simply Said– Communicating better at work.

Another (final) plug: I’ll be speaking and leading a workshop at the Sweathead Do Together (info and tickets here).
The theme is “The Fight Against Mediocrity” and my segment is called “The danger of giving a shit when you know what you’re talking about”
Here’s a screenshot of my screwing up a take. Didn’t matter anyway because my camera went blurry and I have to re-do it. (Dot I promise it’s coming before the end of the day tomorrow)
But it’ll be sick, you should convince your company to buy some tickets. There are gonna be some people way smarter than me contributing.

Technically, this is an insight:

I’ve shared this before (as is also true for several items in today’s email) but I was looking for it recently, so thought I’d throw it in. Remember that we are a small part of the client’s (and brand’s) whole.
