Freelance thought:
there are two main types of freelance work, but they are rarely categorized in this way…
do you need me to do something for you?
or
do you need me to do something with you?
For both freelancer and client, there is often a default to the first one.
With most types of freelance work however, it is difficult to provide real value without having a sense for the organization, client needs, working styles etc.
So more often than not, freelance work based on the “do something for you” model is less useful than it could/should be.
…
Of course, part of the reason freelancers are hired is that there simply isn’t bandwidth to do something yourself.
But it can be both.
If I’m hired to deliver a comms plan for example, I’ll first discuss who will be using it, framework templates already used internally, and any initial thoughts on decisions to be made.
Then I start work on a “here’s what I am thinking” doc – not an early draft of the deliverable, but a plan for what to expect from the final.
Does this take longer than just diving in and “doing something for them” ? – not if you count rounds of feedback down the line.

A while back I put together a big presentation for how the agency I was with at the time could reposition it’s offerings based on what clients think about creative agencies…
Never finished, but here is the draft. (the best information is in the appendix IMO)

WEEKLY MONSTER
Can’t believe I forgot this last week. thank you to those of you who asked why it wasn’t there.
In moments when I am without pen/paper, wifi, or a book, I like to edit photos I have saved on my phone. These often end up as photos in decks and such.
Here are a few recents:
